‘They might go’: Coach fears star duo will leave for Newcastle and West Ham

Danny Owen

Moussa Niakhate and Jerry St Juste could both leave Mainz amid interest from Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Everton and West Ham, Bundesliga boss Bo Svensson tells the Allgemeine Zeitung.

If it’s a reliable centre-half you want – and make no mistake, Everton need one of those – then the MEWA Arena is the place to go. A Mainz side who only avoided relegation via the skin of their teeth last term have conceded just 36 goals in 30 league games this.

Only Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Freiburg can better that tally.

Niakhate, Mainz’s captain colossus who scores goals as well as keeps them out, has played his way onto the radars of Everton, West Ham and Newcastle, according to The Telegraph.

The Hammers and the Magpies are also looking at Niakhate’s centre-back partner St Juste – a jet-heeled Dutchman clocked as the fastest player in the Bundesliga recently. Leicester are admirers too.

Both Niakhate and St Juste are out of contract in 2023. And, according to reports, the defensive duo could be available for a bargain £8 million and £10 million respectively.

From Bundesliga to the Premier League?

“They might both go. It’s also possible that one of them stays. To think that both will stay is very optimistic,” admits Svensson, Mainz’s miracle-working manager and a fitting successor to Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

“Everyone sees the quality they both have. They are at their best footballing age. They still have a year left on their contracts and you don’t go into the last year of a contract with players like that without them either extending or going somewhere else.

“That’s the situation. I value both of them very much. Not only as footballers, but also personality-wise. They are both absolute leaders.

“Should they leave us, I’ll be very grateful for the time I’ve spent with them here. We’ll have to try to replace them in that case.”

According to Sky Germany, Newcastle opened talks to sign former Feyenoord man St Juste in January.

The former Netherlands U21 ace would add real pace to a Newcastle defence which, while increasingly durable under Eddie Howe, is not exactly the quickest.

Tomas Soucek's West Ham future in doubt after halt in contract talks

Tomas Soucek's long-term future at West Ham is in doubt after talks over a new contract were put on hold at the behest of David Moyes, 90min understands.

The 27-year-old has clocked up close to 4,000 minutes in 45 appearances for the Hammers in all competitions this season and has played a key role in holding West Ham's midfield together with Declan Rice.

Discussions over a new contract first surfaced in January, with 90min revealing that the club were prepared to offer Soucek an improved deal to reward his fine performances over the past two years.

However, 90min subsequently learned at the beginning of April that those talks had been shelved, with the intention of returning to the negotiating table at the end of the season.

But it appears that Soucek's long-term future at the London Stadium - he has two years left on the contract he signed when joining from Slavia Prague in the summer of 2020 - may not be as secure as first thought.

Sources close to the situation have told 90min that one reason talks were paused was because Moyes informed the club's hierarchy of his belief that Soucek did not warrant receiving a new contract at the moment - despite his healthy involvement in both the Premier League and Europa League.

That stance is understood to have left Soucek feeling somewhat undermined - despite him appearing to be a key member of the side - and is likely to complicate matters should the club resume talks with a player who is incredibly popular in the dressing room.

Indeed, sources have told 90min that some are surprised at the reluctance to reward Soucek with extended and improved terms.

90min also understands that Soucek is attracting interest from elsewhere, with at least two Premier League clubs among those considering a move - though it's still possible that he extends his contract at West Ham providing any offer put forward to him accurately reflects his standing.

Soucek's goal output has reduced on his impressive first full season at West Ham, but there's no denying that he remains an integral member of the squad.

The Czech has continued to trouble defenders with his aerial threat - though he has played in a more withdrawn midfield role at times - and scored the vital opener against Sevilla in the home leg of West Ham's Europa League last 16 tie with the six-time winners. That is one of six goals he has scored this season, the other five coming in the Premier League.

More impressively, Soucek has shown great durability and stamina to appear in 99 club games in just over two-and-a-half years, as well as turning out in 18 internationals for the Czech Republic.

Man Utd paid £89m for Pogba 5 yrs ago

I don’t think transfer fees have deflated since then, more so they have inflated.

I don’t think they all have that money and I don’t think Pogbas haul of 1 x league cup and 1 x europa cup in those 5 yrs would prove attractive to Rice.

If Rice leaves he goes to a top club. Why would be bigger trying to help Man Utd recapture past glories when he can do that slop here?
